Abstract. Despite the earlier description by Ewing [1], the term lobular carcinoma is largely credited to Foote and Stewart [2] who, in 1941, published their seminal paper describing a detailed morphologic analysis of a distinctive subgroup of in situ carcinoma of the breast. Lobular neoplasia refers to the presence of these cells within the terminal ductal lobular unit, with or without pagetoid extension along terminal and segmental ducts. Lobular neoplasia includes atypical lobular hyperplasia and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), which are distinguished by the degree and extent of lesional involvement of the terminal ductal lobular unit. Atypical hyperplasia (AH) of the breast, which is a diagnostic category of proliferative disease with atypia that includes atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) and atypical lobular hyperplasia (ALH), is associated with an increased risk for the subsequent development of carcinoma. 1-3 The risk applies to both breasts, and the majority of cancers develop in the ipsilateral breast. 3-6 In large Lobular neoplasia Overview.
